Segóbriga - Saelices (Cuenca)

It was built in I b.C. century, but was August emperor who began its highest fortune. The Theater and the Amphitheater were planned in the age of August and were finished in Vespasian times.
Segobriga has converted itself in a city with an important comercial activity due to its situation in a crossroads (Carthago Nova to Complutum, Segontia and Toletum). It had also an important minning activity controlling the production of lapis specularis mines, a crystal chalk that was used in windows or to decorate walls.

It was built between 30 and 60 a.C. years over the slope of a hill out of the wall. It has a eliptical plant, with 75 m. long in its greater axis in the outer and 40-45 m. long in the sand. Its orientation is east-west and in this points were opened its two principals gates. The sand occupy a surface of 1.122 m˛, that make it one of the smallest Anphitheaters kown. It had a capacity of about 5.000 people that were distributed according the social order in diferent rows.

I A.C. Century

Its construction began in the latest of augustean age, prolonged its works until the latest of Vespasianan reign, in the last quarter of I a.C. century. It present a semicircular area or o cavea and one monumental straight stage, today destroyed but that was luxuriously decorated with columns of fluted bodies and solomonic type, besides of statues representing lawyers and muses. Its  dimensions are small with a total diameter of 66 meters. It was built over the slope of a hill, holding up over the rock and out the wall that rounded the city.  It has a calculated capacity of 2.000 spectators.

How to go: On N-III motorway, km. 103 near to Saélices village, take CM-310 road from 3 km.
