Pollentia - Alcudia (Mallorca)

The roman city of Pollentia was founded in 123 b.C. by the consul Quinto Cecilio Metelo which also founded Palma. The objective of Metelo was to make sure the route to Hispania by the see and to eliminate the growing piracy in the islands. During landing in the island the roman army  was to face a rain of projectils thrown by the islanders (which were famous by their hability with the sling). The general was applied the trick to cover the ships with tightened skins that repels the stones, according to Estrabón.
In the founded sites, Palma and Pollentia, three thousands settlers taken away from the romans of Iberia were seated. When Metelo returned to Rome,  received the triumph and the honorific nickname of Ballearicus.

 

Quarter of La PortellaPOLLENTIA'S RUINS
I A.C. Century 

The quarter of La Portella was a residential quarter of Pollentia. Several houses of I a.C. century and a wall of III a.C. century were discovered. It has the House of Two Threasurys (a clear example of roman domus) and rests of two more houses. The ruins was completed with two streets, one of them with porticos flows from east to west (decumanus) and the other flows from north to south (kardo).

 

 

Theater of AlcudiaALCUDIA'S THEATER
I A.C. Century

The roman theater of Pollentia was built in the outsides of the roman city, in the last years of the I a.C. century. It has an approximate capacity of 2000 people and a diameter of 40 meters. It preserve part of the cavea or gradins, the orchestra and the stage with figure rectangular and it improve the surrounded stone. Posteriorly, from the III a.C. century was used as necropolis.
