NOTES FOR A GRAMMAR OF ARAGONESE

REGULAR VERBS: PERFECT TENSES

Perfect tenses of transitive verbs are formed with the simple tenses of aber (to have) plus the past participle that is being conjugated, i.e: He trobau (I have found); Ébanos bibiu astí (We had lived here).

Intransitive verbs are usually conjugated in the same way but some of them can form their perfect tenses with the simple tenses of the verb estar. In this case, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject, i.e: Has corriu muito? (Have you run much?); Zilia ya se'n ye ida (Zilia is already gone).

The complete paradigm of perfect tenses is shown below; in it, for simplification's sake, only one possible form of the past participle is shown (remember what stated in REGULAR VERBS: SIMPLES TENSES: PAST PARTICIPLE).

It should be noted that we can also make the past participle agree in gender and number with the direct object, e.g: Han bendidas todas as güellas que teneban (They have sold all the sheep they had); Tres en he trayidas (I have brouht three of them).

-In Aragonese, this tense does not always imply so a strong connection with the present as it does in English; so, sometimes it must be translated by the simple past, e.g: Qué has dito? (What did you say?).
-Verbal periphrasis such as plegar de u rematar de plus an infinitive are used instead of it with the sense of "have + JUST + past participle", e.g: Plego de dizir-lo-te (I have just told you).
-Verbal periphrasis such as lebar [tiempo] fendo [something] or lebar fendo [something] dende / dende fa [tiempo] are used instead of the present perfect plus "for" or "since", e.g: Leban tres horas asperando (They have waited for three hours); Lebamos estudeando dende as güeito (We have studied since eight); No la he bisto dende fa zinco añadas (I haven't seen her for five years).
