NOTES FOR A GRAMMAR OF ARAGONESE

DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES AND PRONOUNS

They have a deictic function and may accompany the noun (adjectives) or substitute it (pronouns); in both cases their forms are alike.

FIRST TERM (THIS / THESE)

Singular
Plural
Masculine
iste
istos
Feminine
ista
istas
Neuter
isto
--
They refer to something that is near -in time or space- to the speaker or that is present when he is speaking; they can be related to the adverb "here".

SECOND TERM (THAT / THOSE)

Singular
Plural
Masculine
ixe
ixos
Feminine
ixa
ixas
Neuter
ixo
--
They refer to something being at a certain distance from the speaker or not present when he is speaking; they can be related to the adverb "there". [Pay attention to the pronunciation (voiceless prepalatal fricative) of Aragonese "x", which is equivalent to English "sh"]

Neuter pronouns "isto" and "ixo" can represent clauses as they can in English.

EXAMPLES:

Iste auto ye royo (This car is red)
Ixa casa ye berda (That house is green)

Qué ye ixo? (What's that?)
Iste ye o mío chirmán (This is my brother)

Quí dizió isto? (Who said this?)
Tornar ta casa: ixo ye o que quiero (Going back home: that's what I want)
